The Deep South of Louisiana

Image
Crossed the border yesterday on Hwy 10 from TX into Louisiana! Lovely day although cool. Stopped at Visitor Center and took walk around their little park/picnic area along a small bayou! Love the deep south!!! Long day of travel. Continued on today to Bayou Segnette State Park on west side of Mississippi river from new Orleans. Lovely park and love it they have free wifi at campsites and free laundry!!! cant' beat that deal and the efficiency of the workers can't be topped for state parks. They are the best!!

A visit to Galveston; oh Galveston!!

Image
Visiting Galveston Island again actually brought tears to my eyes. Haven't been here since Jan. 2002 and had such wonderful memories from that visit. Was wonderful to drive along the beach even with a storm looming. The temp was 82 so plenty warm enough...

Houston (Johnson) Space Center

Image
This is our 2nd visit to the Houston/Johnson Space Center (NASA) here in TX. Wonderful time although we did not allow enough time to see everything. They close at 5pm and although we were there by noon it just wasn't enough time to do the tour of the Mission Control and the training bldg for the astronauts. They have really made this into a "family" outing with many children activities including tables of legos to play at besides all the hands on activities. It is extensive and an all day affair. Loved it all. It's a shame though more young children are not taught "manners" when visiting places such as this where there is an oral narration given to explain what all you are seeing.

Bidding ado to Medina Lake

Image
A few parting shots from the Medina Lake area here in TX. Not sure what the attraction is but one we always seem to enjoy. Of course having all the wldlife is a plus! Lovely sunsets help too and colorful skies..

Quilting project - completed!!

Image
Finally, finally, my 1st quilt completed!!! Took a long time but finally have it completed and ready to go. Only a baby quilt but hey, you need to start somewhere - right!

Columbus, TX and Peter's BBQ

Image
This is our 3rd time at this TTN park in Columbus, TX - just a little west of Houston. Not sure why we like this park so much but all these trees are pecan trees and yes; we have a nice good sized bag full of them to take when we leave tomorrow! One of our "finds" last time here in '07 was Peter's BBQ! It is a few miles up the road but just loved their tasty meals. Happy to get back here and visit again and can honestly say we were not disappointed! In fact, brother John was delighted with the find.

Armadillos in TX you say??

Image
There really are live armadillos in Texas! Finally after 10 years and 3 trips down here I found my 1st live armadillo! I was out at dusk and lo and behold this little guy was walking along side of me until he stopped, sat up on his hind legs and got a good look at me and then took off as fast as he could in the opposite direction. What a hoot! Haven't seen him again so guess it was a lucky time.

Fun in San Antonio

Image
A visit to San Antonio is always fun and today was no exception. Met some friends (the Fischer's) at Mi Terra Cafe at the old Farmers Market Square. Delightful afternoon... Lots of little shops and such a festive atmosphere! Wasn't exactly the type of farmers market we are used to with fresh produce but had a good time anyway and a very good meal besides!

Everything is bigger in Texas!!

Image
Went walking thru the campground this morning and lo and behold here is what you call a Mailbox! I put our little one next to it and you can see the difference in size! Goodness... makes this state a lot of fun for sure.

Feed the deer

Image
One of the charming things about Medina 1000 trails park is all the deer! I love having them come up and eating right out of a bowl or my hand... only a few will do that... Right now I have a doe who is nearly as big as me on her 4 feet that loves to come up and eat out of my hand and stick her face in mine! It's a crack up .... I wonder if she isn't the baby I fed a few years ago since she is the only one that is not the least bit skittish. In fact, she has hoofed other deer that she things are getting anything as good as she... it's pretty funny but of course I try to be good to them all..

The Alamo

Image
The Alamo in downtown San Antonio is one of our favorite sites. Not sure why since it such a sad story. Guess because we have relation who died there and so much good came from the terrible sadness. Anyway, it is always one of our stops and we never seem to tire of the grounds and the story. They now have a film on the story behind the mission and church besides just the final battle for Texas. The day we visited was picture perfect lovely.
