San Juan Islands

Image
We are finally out of the "black hole" of LaConner without any phone and next to nothing internet and now for a little updating of the past few weeks!  We have been in this area for many years and always go to Deception Pass for our view of "the Islands" but found a new viewpoint up above Campbell lake near Anacortes.  What a view - didn't even have to hike all the way up either although that is an option if you really want to do it!  We chose the easy way this time not knowing what we were in for and oh my what a pretty view... a little hazy but that's what happens up here in between the rain and sun!  Need some rain to clear the air... so far, the summer has been fairly nice so don't want to jinx it but bet on a clear day you could even see farther... Perfectly lovely view and several spots up here to see all around from Mt Baker to Mt Vernon and even over to Anacortes.  Nothing quite like it.

Day hike

Timing worked out for us to take the these "grands" on a day hike down to the beach.  Worked out that it was low tide so we were able to see quite a bit of the beach.  Rebekah did not need a shovel to go clam digging.  She used her hands to chase after the clams that dared to spit at her!  Was so funny to see her digging after them.  She did catch a few, unfortunately she caught them without their shell so that was the end of them but fun just the same.  Quite a number of folks although trail is rather steep in parts and a bit rough.  No problem for these youngsters!  Us older folks were breathing a bit heavy towards the top!  We do not get a lot of these beautiful days so happy we were able to take advantage and get out and do something like this.

Birthday fun

Our grandson Micah just celebrated his 11th birthday!  Made him a special bouquet of candy bars and dollar bills folded as butterflies - to say he loved it is an understatement but a good time was had by all!  Am sure his mother will keep an eye on those treats but that is what grandparents are for I guess  - to do things parents never would dream of doing.

Milk Carton Derby, Greenlake, WA

If you are from the Pacific Northwest you know "Seafair" is a BIG DEAL!  The big Seafair event is the Hydro races the 1st weekend in August with a show from the wonderful Blue Angels (not always anymore).  Leading up to the big Seafair Parade on the Friday before the race on Sunday are a lot of events that start in June maybe... I don't know all the particulars but different towns have street fairs, the "Seafair pirates" come aboard - what ever that really means and there are many other events.  One of those events is the Milk Carton derby on Green lake and this year son Alex submitted an entry for his bar Harvey's.  A blue angel jet - pretty darn cute!  We joined in the fun down at the mob scene on Green lake and watched them race.  There were a lot of entries and different classes so all had to wait their turn.  Fortunately the day was picture perfect and Alex said water pretty warm.  Scarlett came down and joined us too and she and I did a walk around th

4th of July

Nothing quite like our Country's birthday to bring out the people.  This year found us at Ocean Park a few miles up the peninsula from Long Beach, WA in a very small town and a very small parade!  Loved it though.  Think all the folks were there from all the small communities and although it wasn't a "hot" day it was ok - mid 70's.  They did have a few booths set up in the park with goodies for sale and everyone seemed to know the routine of bringing their own "stuff"... We enjoyed it; later walked down to our beach about 4 miles south of Long Beach proper and had the show of a lifetime right on the beach!  We were able to see the fireworks at Long Beach who spent about $25,000 for their display but oh my - the fireworks other people brought... and lit off right next to each other with no regard for who was downwind from them and it was a bit breezy.  We did see one little boy get burned but amazing not more people hurt.  Crazy but fairly safe.  Next da
